Ch11 Β· Inside and Outside Are Two Different Pleasures

← Back to The Hand Is the Starting Striker

Try them side by side sometime and the difference is almost comic, they're so unalike.

One fingertip circling your clitoris, outside, light. It's bright, specific, a little electric β€” it has edges, you can feel exactly where it is, and it climbs fast. It also has a short fuse: a touch too much, a touch too direct, and it flips from yes to too much, and you flinch away from the very thing you wanted a second ago. That's the outside. Sharp, quick, precise, easily overwhelmed.

Now bring the other hand inside and press up against the front wall β€” and stay there, because this one doesn't announce itself the same way. There are no edges. It's heavier, slower, more of a fullness than a spark, a sensation you feel as weight and pressure rather than as a bright point you could put a pin in. It doesn't climb in a quick line; it gathers. Where the outside said here, exactly here, now, the inside says something more like all through here, give it a minute.

Two completely different languages, in the same body, at the same time. And the reason they don't translate into each other is that they aren't the same sensation in two locations β€” they come up through different nerves carrying different kinds of news. The outside runs on the fast, fine ones built for precise surface sensation; the deeper fullness comes through others that speak in pressure and weight. Your clitoris is involved in both β€” its inner parts run back behind that wall β€” but involved isn't the same as identical. What reaches you from the front wall has been shaped by the whole crowded neighborhood it traveled through, and it arrives as a different feeling, not a muffled copy of the sharp one.

Here's what I want you to not do with that difference: rank it. There's a tired idea floating around that the deep, internal, hard-to-reach pleasure is the real one, the mature one, the grown-up orgasm you graduate to, while the reliable bright clitoral one is somehow beginner's stuff. That's nonsense, and it's nonsense that has made a lot of women feel behind for enjoying the pleasure their body actually delivers. Neither is deeper in any sense that matters. One is sharp and one is full. That's a difference in flavor, not in rank.

What the difference is actually good for is choice. Once you can feel that these are two distinct registers β€” the bright specific one and the heavy gathering one β€” you're not stuck with whichever shows up. You can go for the quick clear climb when that's what you want. You can sink into the slow fullness when that's the mood. You can, as the next chapter gets into, see what happens when you let them happen together. The point of telling them apart isn't to file them; it's that you can't deliberately reach for something until you can tell it from the thing next to it.

And there's more this inner wall can do than be pressed and gathered slowly β€” a faster, firmer way of working it that comes later in this book, once you're already high and your body is asking to be driven rather than waited on. Worth saying here that every bit of it is yours to do to yourself, and your own hand has an edge no partner's ever will: your finger pad can find the exact spot and stay pinned to it while it picks up speed, with a precision no penis can manage, and you feel from the inside precisely what you're doing. The fast version isn't a trick someone else has to give you. It's the same wall, driven β€” and nobody drives it more accurately than the woman who lives there.

You can feel the usefulness of this the next time you're actually turned on and a little impatient. Instead of just rubbing harder at whatever you started with and hoping it tips, you can ask your body a real question: do I want the bright climb right now, the quick clear one β€” or do I want to sink into the slow full one and let it gather? Those are different nights, sometimes different ten-minute stretches of the same night. Knowing they're genuinely different feelings, not the same one at two settings, is the whole thing that lets you reach for one on purpose instead of just chasing whatever happens to show up.

So let the two stay different. Don't make the inside imitate the outside or wish the outside were as profound as the inside is supposed to be. They're two pleasures that refuse to copy each other β€” and that refusal, once you stop reading it as a hierarchy, is just a wider menu than you thought you had.

The hand isn't the warm-up you reach for when the 'real' thing didn't land β€” it's the instrument built to read her and finish the job. Here's how.
